Once upon a time there lived a chief of the village of Aliwan, to the west, and a chief of Telmitig, to the east, near Aplow.

Il était une fois le chef du village d'Aliwan, à l'ouest, et le chef de Telmitig, à l’Est, près d'Aplôw.

They led a peaceful life. The chief of Telmitig went regularly to Aliwan to share a meal with him, then went back home by canoe.

Leur vie s'écoulait tranquillement. Régulièrement, le chef de Telmitig se rendait à Aliwan pour prendre un repas avec lui, et puis il s'en retournait chez lui en pirogue.

And when it was the chief of Telmitig who had made the journey, it was then the chief of Aliwan's turn to go to Telmitig to eat with his friend, before taking the canoe back home to Aliwan.

Et lorsque c'était le chef de Telmitig qui avait fait le voyage, c'était ensuite au tour du chef d'Aliwan de se rendre à Telmitig pour prendre un repas avec son ami, avant que de rentrer à son tour en pirogue, jusqu'à Aliwan.

Their happiness from one day to the next: meet each other to drink kava and eat together...

Tel était leur bonheur quotidien: se retrouver pour boire le kava, pour dîner…

One day, the chief of the west had a child.

Un jour, le chef de l'ouest eut un enfant.

As for the chief of the east, his wife also became pregnant; but when the time came, she gave birth... to a gecko.

Quant au chef de l’Est, sa femme tomba également enceinte; mais le jour venu, elle donna naissance… à un gecko.

A little while later, the chief of the west had a second child. As for Telmitig's wife, she only had one offspring, this gecko; she never had another child.

Quelques temps après, le chef de l'ouest eut un second enfant. La femme de Telmitig, quant à elle, n'avait guère eu qu'un seul rejeton, ce gecko; elle n'eut par la suite aucun autre enfant.

After yet another while, a new child was born in the west. Whilst the chief of Aliwan had three daughters, the chief of Telmitig, in the east, only had one child.

Après quelques temps encore, un nouvel enfant naquit à l'ouest. Ainsi, tandis que le chef d'Aliwan avait eu trois filles, celui de Telmitig, à l’Est, n'avait eu qu'un seul enfant.

Time went by. One day, {the chief of Telmitig} suggested to his wife that they go off and find a fiancée for their son.

Le temps passe. Un jour, {le chef de Telmitig} propose à son épouse d'aller trouver une fiancée pour leur fils.

They both set out and, on arriving at the village of Aliwan, saw a young man.

Tous deux se mettent en route, et arrivés au village d'Aliwan, aperçoivent un jeune homme.

He was none other than the chief of Aliwan. "Hello, they greeted him, We would like to take one of your daughters away with us.” – “What for?” – “We want her to marry our child."

Celui-ci n'était autre que le chef d'Aliwan. “Bonjour, lui disent-ils, nous souhaiterions emmener l'une de tes filles.” – “Dans quel but?” – “Nous voudrions qu'elle épouse notre enfant.”

“That's good news!" he exclaimed. "I have no objection, on the contrary, it's perfect! You and I are friends, °and I would never refuse°."

“Quelle bonne nouvelle!” s'exclame-t-il. “Je n'y vois aucun inconvénient, au contraire, c'est parfait! Toi et moi nous sommes des amis, et je ne saurais refuser.”

He went to fetch his eldest daughter and presented her to them: "Here's the wife you were looking for.” – “That's just perfect!" they answer.

Il va chercher sa fille aînée, qu'il leur présente: “Voici l'épouse que vous cherchiez.” – “C'est parfait!”, répondent-ils.

They got her to climb into their canoe to take her back to their home.

Ils la font grimper dans leur pirogue, pour la conduire jusque chez eux.

Just as they were about to leave for Aplow, he said "She'll go and live with you for a while. Then, when you receive a message from me asking you to pay your debt for my daughter, I'll come to your house for the official wedding. I'll come by canoe, and then we can proceed with the exchange ceremony.” – “No problem", the other replied.

Au moment où ils allaient prendre la mer pour Aplow, il leur dit: “Elle ira vivre avec vous pendant quelque temps. Puis, le jour où tu recevras de ma part un message demandant que tu acquittes ta dette pour ma fille, alors je viendrai chez toi pour le mariage officiel. Je ferai le voyage avec ma pirogue, et puis nous pourrons procéder à la cérémonie des échanges.” – “Pas de problème”, dit l'autre.

They eventually arrived in their village; when night fell, they all went to bed.

Ils arrivent enfin à leur village; puis le soir venu, ils vont tous se coucher.

The girl lay down on the bed of her gecko husband. As for the gecko, he was lying just underneath, under the bed! She was on top, and he was underneath.

La jeune fille va donc s'allonger sur le lit de son mari gecko. Le gecko, quant à lui, se trouve juste en dessous, sous le lit! Elle au dessus, lui en dessous.

Time went on as they lay there, until the girl asked the mother: "Mother-in-law!” – “What is it?” – “Well... I mean - I don't know where my husband is!"

Ils restent ainsi allongés, chacun de son côté, jusqu'au moment où la jeune fille demande à la mère: “Belle-maman?” – “Qu'est-ce qu'il y a?” – “Eh bien… Comment dire? Je ne sais pas où est mon mari!”

“You must be patient", the mother replied. "Wait until it gets dark and you'll hear him whining."

“Un peu de patience”, répond la mère. “Attends qu'il fasse bien nuit, tu l'entendras couiner.”

A few moments later, the father came in.

Quelques instants plus tard, le père entre à son tour.

“Excuse me, uncle.” – “Yes?” – “I was wondering... well... I don't know where my fiancé is.” – “Patience! he answers, he'll come to you when it gets pitch dark."

“Pardon, mon oncle.” – “Oui?” – “Je me demandais… enfin… Je ne sais pas où se trouve mon fiancé.” – “Patience! répond-il, il viendra à toi quand il fera vraiment nuit noire.”

(In fact, he was already there, just underneath the bed!)

(En réalité, il était déjà là, juste en dessous du lit!)

“But it's already pitch dark!” – “Wait a little while, he'll come."

“Mais enfin, il fait déjà nuit noire!” – “Attends un peu, il va venir.”

She waited and waited. Then, when it got really dark, the gecko started whining.

Elle reste là, à attendre. Puis, lorsque la nuit finit par devenir bien noire, le gecko se met à couiner.

And still whining, he climbed up on to the bed.

Et tout en couinant, le voici qui grimpe au-dessus du lit.

The girl turned round and saw the gecko. Horrified, she shrieked and, wasting no time, took to her heels all the way back to her village of Aliwan, in the middle of the night!

La jeune fille se retourne, aperçoit le gecko. Épouvantée, elle pousse un cri, et sans attendre une seconde de plus, s'enfuit à toutes jambes, jusqu'à son village d'Aliwan, en pleine nuit!

When he saw her, her father asked "What happened?!” – “Oh, my! she said, if only you knew! When I went to live over there, it was to marry a boy! But instead of a boy, do you know what I found there? A gecko! I just hate geckos, these four-legged creatures! The minute I found out, I ran away!”

En la voyant, son père lui demande “Mais qu'est-ce qui se passe?!” – “Ah là là! fait-elle, si tu savais! Quand je suis allée vivre là-bas, c'était pour épouser un garçon! Mais au lieu d'un garçon, tu sais ce que j'ai trouvé là-bas? Un gecko! J'allais me marier avec un gecko, une bestiole à quatre pattes! Dès que j'ai compris, je me suis enfuie en courant!”

A few minutes later, they saw the canoe of the father-in-law, the chief of Telmitig, approaching. As soon as he arrived at Aliwan, he cried out: "I've come to fetch the girl. I want your eldest daughter to return to my house!"

Quelques instants après, ils voient venir la pirogue du beau-père, le chef de Telmitig. À peine arrivé à Aliwan, il lance: “Je suis venu rechercher la fille. Je veux que ta fille aînée retourne chez moi!”

“No!" she answered, "You go, if you want to! But I will certainly not marry a gecko!"

“Pas question!” rétorque-t-elle, “Vas-y toi-même, si tu veux y aller! Mais moi, il est hors de question que je me marie avec un gecko!”

The chief of Telmitig wondered "But what are we going to do?!” – “Don't worry, his friend answered, I'll send you my second daughter."

“Mais alors, se demande le chef de Telmitig, comment faire?!” – “Ne t'inquiète pas, lui répond son ami, je t'envoie ma deuxième fille.”

True to his promise: the second daughter was next to go.

Chose promise, chose dûe: la deuxième fille part à son tour.

When they arrived at Telmitig, it was already time to go to bed.

Lorsqu'ils arrivent à Telmitig, c'est déjà l'heure d'aller se coucher.

“Where's my husband?" she asked. – "Your husband? He'll soon be here, he won't be long. In a moment, you'll hear him whining, and then he'll appear."

“Où est mon mari?” demande-t-elle. – “Ton mari? Il sera bientôt là, il va arriver dans un instant. Tout à l'heure, tu l'entendras d'abord couiner, et puis il apparaîtra.”

And the same thing happened. When it was really dark, she heard a kind of whining noise.

Et ce fut à nouveau la même histoire. Lorsque la nuit fut bien noire, elle entendit s'élever une sorte de couinement.

The young girl turned over on the bed, and suddenly caught sight of the gecko. Horrified at her discovery, she uttered a cry and jumped backwards.

La jeune fille se retourna sur le lit, et soudain aperçut le gecko. Épouvantée de sa découverte, elle poussa un cri et recula d'un bond.

To the gecko as it got near her, she shouted "Aghh! You're disgusting!" and off she ran all the way back home, to Aliwan.

Au gecko qui s'approchait, elle lança “Pouah! Tu me fais horreur!” et puis elle prit ses jambes à son cou, et détala jusque chez elle, à Aliwan.

She had hardly got back at Aliwan, that the chief of Telmitig also arrived that very morning in his canoe.

À peine avait-elle regagné Aliwan, qu'à son tour le chef de Telmitig arriva dans sa pirogue, le matin même.

Upon his arrival, he said to his friend, the chief of Aliwan: "I've come to fetch your daughter.” – “Oh yes? What's happened this time?” – “Oh, father: the girl interrupts, I went thinking I was going to marry a boy, but the only husband I found there was a four-legged creature! a gecko!”

Dès son arrivée, il lance à son ami le chef d'Aliwan: “Je viens rechercher ta fille.” – “Ah bon? Qu'est-il arrivé, encore?” – “Oh, mon père! interrompt la jeune fille, j'étais partie dans l'idée d'épouser un garçon, mais le seul mari que j'ai trouvé là-bas, c'était une bestiole à quatre pattes! Un gecko!”

“Oh dear! What am I to do now?! You must go back! This man is an important person, I can't let him down this way.” – “No! the girl retorts. I won't go back there. Why don't you send our youngest sister?"

“Aïe aïe aïe! Mais qu'est-ce que je vais faire maintenant! Il faut que tu y retournes! Cet homme est une personne importante, je ne peux pas le trahir de cette façon.” – “Pas question! rétorque la jeune fille. Je n'irai pas. Tu n'as qu'à envoyer la cadette!”

“Alright, the youngest sister said. I'll go, it's my turn."

“D'accord, intervient la cadette. J'y vais, c'est mon tour.”

The young girl joined the chief of Telmitig, and they both set off back to Aplow.

La jeune fille rejoint le chef de Telmitig, et tous deux s'en retournent à Aplow.

They arrived at dusk, at bathing time.

Ils arrivent à la tombée de la nuit, à l'heure de la baignade.

She asked the gecko's father: "Uncle!” – “Yes?" – "Where's my husband?"

Elle demande au père du gecko: “Mon oncle!” – “Oui?” – “Où est mon mari?”

“Patience, he answered. Once it gets really dark, he'll appear to you, whining."

“Patience, lui répond-il. Quand il fera nuit noire, il t'apparaîtra en couinant.”

“Oh, really", she said. (In fact she already knew, because her sisters had explained everything to her: "Beware, if you go there it's to marry a gecko!" – and she answered: "Never mind, I'll go nonetheless...")

“D'accord”, fait-elle. (En réalité, elle était déjà au courant, car ses sœurs lui avaient tout expliqué: “Attention, tu vas là-bas pour épouser un gecko!” – et elle avait répondu: “Tant pis, j'irai quand même…”)

She sat down, and began to wait. After a while, she heard the first whining noises of the gecko from under the bed.

Elle s'assied donc, et se met à attendre. Au bout d'un certain temps, elle entend monter d'en dessous du lit les premiers couinements du gecko.

She immediately understood that was her husband. However, she questioned the mother: "Mother-in-law!” – “Yes?” – “Wherever's my husband?” – “Wait a little, he'll appear to you in a while."

D'emblée elle comprend qu'il s'agit de son mari. Pourtant, elle interpelle la mère: “Belle-maman!” – “Oui?” – “Où donc est mon mari?” – “Attends un peu, il va t'apparaître dans un instant.”

Sitting on the bed, the girl began to feel sleepy. Suddenly she sensed the gecko climbing on to her back.

Assise sur son lit, la jeune fille commence à se sentir gagnée par le sommeil. Soudain, elle sent le gecko lui grimper sur le dos.

Picking him up in her hands, she said to herself "Yes, this is really him, my gecko."

Le prenant dans ses mains, elle se dit “Mais oui, c'est bien lui, mon gecko.”

She helped him off her shoulder, put him on the pillow, and pulled the blanket up over him to warm him.

Elle le fait descendre de son épaule, le pose sur l'oreiller, et puis ramène un peu la couverture sur lui pour le réchauffer.

Holding the little animal tightly against her body, she eventually fell asleep with him.

Serrant contre son corps le petit animal, elle finit par s'endormir avec lui.

Night gently passed by, gradually turning into day. As for the chief of Aliwan, he thought to himself: "This time everything's fine. My daughter seems satisfied. Instead of fleeing this gecko, she has accepted him as a husband. At last!"

La nuit s'écoule en douceur et laisse la place au jour. Le chef d'Aliwan, de son côté, se dit déjà en lui-même: “Cette fois-ci, c'est parfait. Ma fille a l'air satisfaite. Au lieu de fuir ce gecko en courant, elle a accepté de le prendre pour mari. Enfin!”

As for the two elder sisters, they were making fun of her: "Oh dear, how shameful! She's chosen a gecko for a husband, she even spent the night with him! She didn't even run away!"

De leur côté, les deux sœurs aînées se moquent déjà d'elle: “Ah là là, quelle honte! Elle a pris un gecko pour mari, pire, elle passe la nuit avec! Elle n'a même pas eu la force de le fuir…!”

The young girl took no heed of these sarcasms, but was happy to sleep alongside her husband, even though a gecko.

Bien loin de ces sarcasmes, notre jeune fille était heureuse, heureuse de serrer contre elle son mari, tout gecko qu'il était.

And so they lived, peacefully, from one day to the next.

Et la vie s'écoule ainsi, de jour en jour, paisiblement.

One night, when everyone was asleep, the gecko decided to go fishing.

Une nuit, alors que tout le monde est endormi, le gecko décide d'aller pêcher à la ligne.

To do so, he began to shed his skin and moult.

Pour ce faire, il se met à changer de peau, à muer.

Lying on the bed beside his wife sound asleep, our gecko undergoes a metamorphosis: and while his animal body remains asleep next to her, it is now a fine young man who gets up from the bed and goes on his way!

Étendu sur le lit aux côtés de son épouse profondément assoupie, voilà que notre gecko se métamorphose: et tandis que son corps animal reste à dormir à côté d'elle, c'est maintenant un magnifique jeune homme qui se lève du lit, et se met en chemin!

One after the other the mullets rose to the bait, ever more plentiful.

L'un après l'autre, les rougets mordent à l'hameçon, de plus en plus nombreux…

And while his wife was still sleeping, the young man came back and hung his catch on to one of the bamboo trees overhanging (taller than) the roof, by the front door of the house.

Et alors que sa femme est encore assoupie, le jeune homme revient suspendre le produit de sa pêche à l'un des bambous qui dépasse du toit, à l'entrée de la maison.

When she woke up, a little later, the young girl opened wide her eyes: "Wow! A string of fish!”

Lorsqu'elle se réveille, un peu plus tard, la jeune fille écarquille les yeux: “Ça alors! Un cordon de poissons!”

The girl calls her uncle: "Uncle!” – “Yes?” – “Who caught these fish?” – “I don't know. I was wondering who that might have been myself.”

La jeune fille interpelle son beau-père: “Mon oncle!” – “Oui?” – “Qui a pêché tous ces poissons?” – “Je n'en sais rien. Je me demande aussi qui cela peut bien être.”

(In fact, it was a trick played by the gecko: he was the one, transformed into a young man, who had caught the fish!)

(En réalité, c'était là un tour joué par le gecko: c'était lui qui, transformé en jeune homme, était allé les pêcher!)

“Really, I don't know. But never mind: let's help ourselves!" The girl took the fish and cooked them for dinner: there was more than enough to feed the whole family.

“Vraiment, je n'en sais rien. Mais qu'à cela ne tienne: servons-nous!” La jeune fille prend les poissons et les fait cuire pour le repas: il y en avait largement assez pour nourrir toute la famille.

Thus time went by... One day, she thought, "Tonight I must find out who is behind these mysterious catches.”

Et les jours s'écoulent ainsi… Un jour, elle se dit “Ce soir, je veux savoir qui se cache derrière ces pêches mystérieuses.”

That same evening, when everyone had gone to bed, our young wife lit a fire in the hearth under the food cupboard.

Le soir même, à l'heure où tout le monde est couché, notre jeune épouse allume un feu dans le foyer, sous le garde-manger.

Then, like the others, she lay down on her bed and pretended to sleep. The young man, believing his wife to be fast asleep, got up and went out.

Puis, comme les autres, elle s'allonge sur son lit, et fait semblant de dormir. Croyant sa femme profondément endormie, notre jeune homme se lève et sort.

The young woman opened an eye and thought to herself "He's gone, now." But suddenly she noticed the scaly skin of the gecko lying on the mat. She picked it up and threw it into the fire. She blew on the embers to rouse the flames... And finally she went back to bed and fell asleep.

La jeune femme ouvre l'œil, et se dit “Ça y est, il est parti.” Mais soudain, elle aperçoit la dépouille écailleuse du gecko, encore étendue sur la natte. Elle la prend dans ses mains, et va la jeter au feu. Elle souffle, souffle sur les braises pour faire monter les flammes… Enfin, elle revient s'allonger, et s'endort.

Standing on the reef, our gecko, now a man, felt the first shivers of fever. "Woe is me! he thought. My wife has thrown me into the fire. I must hurry home, I'm burning!”

Debout sur le récif, notre gecko, devenu homme, ressent déjà les premiers frissons de la fièvre. “Pauvre de moi! se dit-il. Ma femme m'a jeté sur le feu. Vite, rentrons, je brûle!”

He rushed back home. As soon as he arrived, his wife welcomed him with a hug.

Il file aussitôt jusque chez lui. Dès qu'il arrive, sa femme qui l'attendait le serre dans ses bras.

“You terror, she cried, holding him tight, you've been hiding things from me! You're not really a gecko! I love you, husband!”

“Vilain, s'écrie-t-elle en le serrant bien fort, tu m'as fait des cachotteries! En réalité tu n'es pas un gecko! Je t'aime, ô mon mari!”

“No, no, he answered, I cannot marry you, I'm not your real husband.” – “Yes you are! Don't talk nonsense! There's no more gecko, I slung it into the fire.” – “You really hurt me, you know.”

“Non, non, répond-il, ce n'est pas à moi de t'épouser, ce n'est pas moi ton vrai mari.” – “Si si, c'est toi! Ne dis pas n'importe quoi! Le gecko, c'est terminé, je l'ai jeté au feu.” – “Tu m'as fait bien du mal, tu sais.”

“No, I didn't hurt you. The only thing I really want is to marry you!”

“Mais non, je ne t'ai fait aucun mal. La seule chose que je désire, c'est de te prendre pour époux!”

She insisted so much that he eventually accepted. At first they discussed with his father; and then off she ran to her father in Aliwan.

Elle insista tant et si bien qu'il finit par accepter. D'abord ils en parlèrent avec son père à lui; et puis, sans attendre, elle courut retrouver son père à elle, à Aliwan.

“Daddy, daddy! At last I'm going to marry a boy! Up to now I'd been given a gecko as a husband – but from now on things are different, I'm going to marry a man!”

“Papa, papa! Enfin, je vais me marier avec un garçon! Jusqu'ici, tu sais, c'était un gecko qu'on m'avait donné pour mari – mais désormais, c'est différent, je me marie avec un homme!”

Surprised, her father replied "That's wonderful! So it's a real boy that you're going to marry, is it? Well, that's perfect! Tomorrow I'll take my canoe and join you there.”

Surpris, son père lui répond “C'est merveilleux! Ainsi, c'est un vrai garçon que tu vas épouser? Mais c'est parfait! Demain, je prends ma pirogue et je vous rejoins là-bas.”

Shortly afterwards, both of them prepared the boat and set out for the village in the east. The mother and all the family went to celebrate the official wedding.

Peu après, tous deux préparent leur embarcation, et s'apprêtent à partir au village de l’Est. La mère vient aussi, et toute la famille, pour aller célébrer les noces officielles.

When the ceremony was over, everyone prepared to journey back to the village. However, the eldest sister – the first to have shunned the gecko – said to her mother: "Mother! You go back to our village of Aliwan; but I want to stay here with the newlyweds.”

À l'issue de la cérémonie, tout le monde s'apprête à rentrer au village. Pourtant, la sœur aînée – celle-là même qui avait la première repoussé le gecko – dit à sa mère: “Ma mère! Vous, vous pouvez repartir à notre village d'Aliwan; mais moi, je voudrais rester ici avec les deux mariés.”

“No, you won't!" the youngest sister retorted. "I don't want to see you again! You rejected the gecko you'd been given as a husband. He's my husband now!”

“Pas question!” lui rétorque la cadette. “Je ne veux plus te voir, rentre chez toi! Toi, tu as rejeté le gecko qu'on t'avait donné pour mari. Cet homme-là, c'est mon mari à moi!”

The second sister added: "OK. You go back to the village, I'll stay with the newlyweds!" In fact, both sisters had fallen in love with the young man with the fair complexion. But what they didn't know was that this fair complexion was due to the gecko's metamorphosis.

La deuxième sœur intervient à son tour: “Très bien. Toi tu rentres au village, c'est moi qui resterai avec les deux mariés!” En fait, les deux sœurs étaient tombées amoureuses de ce jeune homme au teint si clair. Et ce qu'elles ignoraient, c'est que ce teint clair était dû à la métamorphose du gecko.

They were so enamoured that they begged to stay with him. His wife, the youngest sister, remained firm: "Go away, he's my husband!" But they continued to argue...

Elles s'en étaient tellement amourachées, qu'elles suppliaient de rester avec lui. Sa femme, la cadette, résistait de pied ferme: “Allez-vous en, c'est mon mari à moi!” Mais leur dispute ne cessait pas...

They argued and argued but neither the eldest, nor the youngest resolved to leave.

Elles se disputèrent tant et si bien que ni l'aînée, ni la puînée, ni la cadette ne se résolurent à repartir.

The two sisters finally took a terrible decision: to kill the young man.

Les deux sœurs finirent par prendre une décision terrible: celle d'assassiner le jeune homme.

The story doesn't tell us how they went about it – but that same evening, they killed him.

L'histoire ne dit pas comment elles s'y sont prises – mais toujours est-il que le soir venu, elles l'avaient déjà tué.

Everyone was still asleep. The next morning, the young bride, the youngest of the three sisters, discovered with horror the lifeless body of her husband.

Tout le monde dormait encore. Le matin, au réveil, la jeune mariée, la plus jeune des trois sœurs, découvrit avec horreur le corps sans vie de son mari.

She cried out to her sisters: "Go away! I want you to go back to our father! Murderers! You've murdered my husband! Go straight back to the village and tell the truth to our father: tell him that this husband you first rejected, he's the one I married, and he's the one I helped turn into a man. And you can also tell him that I've decided to join him in death.”

Elle lança aussitôt à ses sœurs: “Allez-vous en! Je veux vous voir repartir immédiatement chez notre père! Assassines! Vous avez tué mon mari! Vous allez partir tout de suite au village, et dire la vérité à notre père: dire que ce mari que vous avez d'abord rejeté, c'est lui que j'ai épousé, et c'est lui que j'ai aidé à se transformer en homme. Et vous pourrez dire aussi, c'est décidé, que je l'accompagne dans la mort.”

Without wasting a moment, she climbed up the framework of the house on to the main beam. There she fixed a rope to the bamboo ridgepole, slipped it round her neck and jumped. Strangled by the rope, she uttered her last sigh.

Sans attendre, elle escalade la charpente de la maison, et se dresse sur la poutre transversale. De là, elle fixe une corde sur le bambou du faîte, se la passe autour du cou, et saute. Étranglée par la corde, elle pousse son dernier soupir.
